Cloudflare Gateway adds 7 new protocol detection options in beta

New Protocol Support

Cloudflare Gateway's Protocol Detection feature now detects seven additional protocols in beta, expanding beyond the existing set of HTTP, HTTP2, SSH, TLS, DCERPC, MQTT, and TPKT:

  • Email protocols: IMAP (retrieval), POP3 (retrieval), SMTP (sending)
  • Infrastructure protocols: MySQL database wire protocol, rsync-daemon, LDAP, NTP

How to Use

These protocols integrate seamlessly with Gateway's Network policies through the Detected Protocol selector. Organizations can now filter and identify traffic based on the actual application-layer protocol rather than port numbers, reducing reliance on port-based identification which can be unreliable.

If protocol detection is already enabled on your account, these protocols will be automatically logged when detected in your Gateway network traffic. No additional configuration is required to start seeing these protocols in your logs.

Next Steps

Review the Protocol detection documentation to learn how to leverage these new protocols in your Network policies and implement more granular traffic filtering rules.
