Mini-Units Transform Intermediate Learning

Duolingo has rolled out a significant restructuring of its intermediate learning content (Duolingo Score 60–130) into smaller, more focused units called mini-units. Each mini-unit introduces just a handful of new vocabulary or grammar concepts before immediately putting them into practice through Stories, DuoRadio, and Video Call features.

What Changed and Why

The redesign addresses direct learner feedback gathered through research and user surveys. Learners reported that long, traditional units often felt repetitive and overly abstract, with insufficient opportunities to use language in realistic situations. The new format tackles both engagement and effectiveness: shorter units feel more satisfying to complete, while the emphasis on listening and speaking practice throughout each mini-unit provides more real-world application opportunities.

Immediate Impact

All intermediate course content has now been converted to the mini-unit format. Duolingo is testing this approach in other parts of its courses as well, suggesting the model may expand to beginner and advanced sections. This represents a meaningful shift in how the platform structures learning—moving from long content blocks to bite-sized lessons designed for faster progress and immediate language application.

For intermediate learners: The new format is already live and offers more engaging, practice-focused learning with shorter completion times. For Duolingo: This redesign sets the template for broader platform improvements aimed at balancing efficacy with user satisfaction.
