Redesigned Intermediate Learning Path
Duolingo is rolling out mini-units for all intermediate learners, fundamentally restructuring how users progress through courses. Each mini-unit is designed to be shorter and more focused than previous unit structures, introducing just a handful of new words and vocabulary before immediately putting them into practical use.
User-Driven Changes
The redesign stems directly from learner feedback and research. Users reported that longer units felt repetitive and overly abstract, with limited opportunities to use language in realistic scenarios. This new approach maintains engagement by breaking content into smaller, more satisfying chunks—users now see tangible progress as they complete individual nodes rather than grinding through extended units.
Enhanced Practice Opportunities
Key improvements include:
- More frequent listening and speaking sessions distributed throughout each mini-unit
- Real-world language practice through Stories, DuoRadio (listening practice), and Video Call features
- Immediate application of newly learned grammar and vocabulary
- Better psychological reinforcement from completing units more frequently
Ongoing Testing and Future Plans
All intermediate content has now been reformatted into mini-units. Duolingo is testing this approach in other course sections as well, signaling plans to extend the mini-unit model across its broader platform. This suggests a broader strategic shift toward bite-sized, high-engagement learning experiences.
