Fast Mode Performance Boost

GitHub is rolling out a research preview of fast mode for Claude Opus 4.6 in GitHub Copilot. This optimized variant delivers significantly accelerated inference, with output token speeds up to 2.5x faster than standard Opus 4.6, while maintaining identical intelligence and capabilities. This is an early, experimental release focused on speed optimization for development workflows.

Availability and Access

Fast mode for Claude Opus 4.6 is available to Copilot Pro+ and Enterprise subscribers. Users can select the model via the model picker in:

  • Visual Studio Code (chat, ask, edit, and agent modes)
  • Copilot CLI

The rollout is gradual—if the model doesn't appear immediately, check back soon as deployment continues.

Important Pricing Note

Editor's note: The preview promotional period ends February 16, 2025 (Pacific Time). After the promotion expires, a 30x premium request multiplier will apply to this model, significantly increasing usage costs.

For Enterprise Administrators

Copilot Enterprise plan administrators must manually enable the Fast mode for Claude Opus 4.6 policy in Copilot settings to grant access to their teams.
