GitHub brings Copilot usage metrics dashboard to organization level in public preview
What's New
GitHub is making Copilot usage metrics dashboards available at the organization level, expanding access beyond enterprise-only reporting. Previously, only enterprise admins could view detailed Copilot usage data. Now organization owners can access organization-scoped usage metrics directly from the GitHub UI.
Who Can Access
- Organization types: All organization types can use the dashboard, including enterprise-owned organizations and standalone Free or Team organizations
- Permissions: Organization owners and users with a custom role that includes
View Organization Copilot Metricscan access the dashboard (requires Copilot usage metrics to be enabled for the enterprise or organization)
Key Benefits
- Adoption tracking: Understand Copilot adoption and usage trends at the organization level without relying on enterprise reporting
- Least privilege access: Share access using organization-scoped roles without granting enterprise-wide visibility
- Independent insights: Day-to-day org-level insights available to organization admins directly in the GitHub UI
Important Implementation Detail
If your organization belongs to an enterprise, organization-level totals won't match enterprise totals. This is because users can belong to multiple organizations, so their usage can appear in more than one organization report, while enterprise reporting deduplicates users across all organizations.
The feature is currently in public preview. Check the Copilot metrics documentation for details on which metrics are included.
