What's Changed

GitHub has enabled model native web search in GitHub Copilot Chat on github.com for certain AI models. This enhancement allows Copilot to leverage the underlying model's built-in web search capabilities, delivering faster and more accurate answers to current events and other time-sensitive questions.

Available Models

The feature is now available across the following models:

  • GPT-5.1
  • GPT-5.1-Codex
  • GPT-5.1-Codex-Mini (public preview)
  • GPT-5.1-Codex-Max
  • GPT-5.2-Codex

Other models will continue to use Bing search as their web search provider.

How to Access

This capability is available to all public preview-enabled paid Copilot subscribers. Organizations and enterprises can enable this feature by selecting Opt in to preview features in the Copilot in github.com settings.

Users can opt out of model native web search at any time by toggling off the "Copilot can search the web using model native search" setting in Copilot settings.

What's Next

GitHub plans to roll out this functionality across more models and contexts within GitHub Copilot. Users are encouraged to share feedback in the GitHub community discussions.
