GitHub Copilot adds user-level CLI usage metrics for enterprise monitoring
Expanded CLI Visibility for Copilot Users
GitHub has rolled out user-level CLI activity tracking for Copilot usage metrics, complementing the enterprise-level telemetry released the previous week. This expansion gives organizations granular insights into how developers are using Copilot CLI on an individual basis.
What's Now Available
The new user-level endpoint allows teams to:
- Identify Active CLI Users: Spot which team members are leveraging Copilot CLI and where additional enablement or support may be needed
- Measure Usage Patterns: Track CLI request counts and session totals to understand daily developer usage habits
- Monitor Token Consumption: Gain visibility into per-user token usage for capacity planning and budget forecasting
Getting Started
Organizations can access this data through the updated REST API. GitHub has published API documentation detailing the user-level endpoint specifications and parameters. Developers can also join discussions in the GitHub Community to share feedback and best practices.
This represents GitHub's broader strategy to provide comprehensive observability into Copilot adoption across both enterprise and individual user tiers.
