GitHub Copilot coding agent for Jira enters public preview with autonomous issue resolution
Overview
GitHub has released a public preview of GitHub Copilot for Jira, a new integration that brings autonomous coding capabilities directly into Jira workflows. Teams can now assign issues to the Copilot coding agent, which will independently implement changes and create draft pull requests in GitHub repositories.
How It Works
When you assign a Jira issue to Copilot, the agent:
- Analyzes context: Reads the issue description and comments to understand requirements
- Implements autonomously: Works independently to write code and open draft pull requests
- Communicates updates: Posts progress in Jira via the agent panel
- Asks clarifying questions: Requests additional information when needed directly in Jira
Key Benefits
- Accelerate repetitive work: Automates bug fixes, documentation updates, and other routine tasks
- Minimize context switching: Keep your workflow centered on Jira without constant GitHub navigation
- Maintain code quality: All generated pull requests respect your existing review and approval rules
