GitHub Copilot coding agent for Jira enters public preview with autonomous PR generation
GitHub Copilot · featureintegrationrelease · github.blog ↗

Overview

GitHub Copilot coding agent is now available as a public preview integration with Atlassian Jira Cloud. This integration enables developers to seamlessly assign Jira issues to an autonomous AI agent that independently analyzes requirements, implements changes, and creates draft pull requests in GitHub repositories.

How It Works

When you assign a Jira issue to GitHub Copilot, the agent will:

  • Analyze context from the Jira issue's description and comments to understand requirements
  • Implement changes autonomously and open draft pull requests in your GitHub repository
  • Post updates in Jira via the agent panel to keep stakeholders informed
  • Ask clarifying questions directly in Jira when additional information is needed

Key Benefits

  • Accelerate repetitive tasks like bug fixes and documentation updates
  • Reduce context switching between Jira and GitHub while preserving existing workflows
  • Maintain governance by following your existing review and approval rules for all generated pull requests

Getting Started

  1. Install the GitHub Copilot for Jira app from the Atlassian Marketplace
  2. Install the corresponding GitHub app during setup
  3. Connect your GitHub organization and configure repository access
  4. Assign a Jira issue to GitHub Copilot or @mention the agent in issue comments
