GitHub Copilot coding agent now integrates with Jira in public preview
GitHub Copilot Coding Agent for Jira Now Available
GitHub has released a public preview of its Copilot coding agent integration for Jira, enabling teams to assign issues directly to an AI-powered autonomous agent for implementation and code generation.
How It Works
When you assign a Jira issue to the Copilot coding agent, it will:
- Analyze context from the Jira issue's description and comments
- Implement changes autonomously and create a draft pull request in your GitHub repository
- Maintain communication by posting updates and asking clarifying questions directly in Jira
- Respect existing workflows by following your organization's review and approval rules for every generated pull request
Key Benefits
- Accelerate repetitive work: Automate common tasks like bug fixes and documentation updates
- Reduce context switching: Keep work in Jira while code changes appear in GitHub seamlessly
- Preserve existing processes: All pull requests go through your standard review pipeline
Getting Started
To use the integration:
- Install the GitHub Copilot for Jira app from the Atlassian Marketplace (which also installs the corresponding GitHub app)
- Connect your GitHub organization during setup
- Configure repository access permissions for the agent
- Assign a Jira issue to GitHub Copilot or @mention it in comments to trigger the agent
