Affected Models and Timeline

GitHub will deprecate the following models across Copilot Chat, inline edits, ask and agent modes, and code completions:

  • Gemini 3 Pro (deprecated March 26, 2026) → migrate to Gemini 3.1 Pro
  • GPT-5.1 (deprecated April 1, 2026) → migrate to GPT-5.3-Codex
  • GPT-5.1-Codex (deprecated April 1, 2026) → migrate to GPT-5.3-Codex
  • GPT-5.1-Codex-Mini (deprecated April 1, 2026) → migrate to GPT-5.3-Codex
  • GPT-5.1-Codex-Max (deprecated April 1, 2026) → migrate to GPT-5.3-Codex

The Gemini 3 Pro deprecation is accelerated due to upstream provider deprecation from Google Cloud.

Required Actions

For all users: Update workflows and integrations to use the suggested alternative models before the deprecation dates take effect.

For Copilot Enterprise administrators: Enable access to alternative models through model policies in Copilot settings. Verify availability by checking individual Copilot settings and enabling the policy for the specific model. Once enabled, the model will appear in the Copilot Chat model selector in VS Code and on github.com. No manual action is required to remove deprecated models after the sunset date.

For GitHub Enterprise customers: Reach out to your account manager if you have questions or concerns about the migration path.
