Model Deprecation Schedule
GitHub is deprecating the following models across all Copilot experiences (Copilot Chat, inline edits, ask and agent modes, and code completions):
- Gemini 3 Pro - Deprecation date: March 26, 2026 (alternative: Gemini 3.1 Pro)
- GPT-5.1 - Deprecation date: April 1, 2026 (alternative: GPT-5.3-Codex)
- GPT-5.1-Codex - Deprecation date: April 1, 2026 (alternative: GPT-5.3-Codex)
- GPT-5.1-Codex-Mini - Deprecation date: April 1, 2026 (alternative: GPT-5.3-Codex)
- GPT-5.1-Codex-Max - Deprecation date: April 1, 2026 (alternative: GPT-5.3-Codex)
The Gemini 3 Pro deprecation is accelerated due to Google Cloud provider deprecation of that model.
Action Items for Users and Administrators
Developers and teams should update their workflows and integrations to use the suggested alternative models before the deprecation dates. For teams using GitHub Copilot Enterprise, administrators may need to enable access to alternative models through model policies in Copilot settings.
To verify availability and enable new models, administrators should:
- Check individual Copilot settings
- Confirm that policies are enabled for the desired alternative models
- Verify the model appears in the Copilot Chat model selector in VS Code and github.com
No manual action is required to remove deprecated models once they are sunset. Enterprise customers with questions should contact their account manager for assistance. Additional documentation on supported models is available in GitHub's official Copilot reference documentation.
