Long-Term Support for Enterprise Stability

GitHub has announced a new long-term support (LTS) commitment for GitHub Copilot, addressing the need for enterprise customers to conduct thorough internal security and safety reviews. Designated LTS models will be available for a full 12 months from launch, giving organizations the stability they need for compliance and evaluation processes.

GPT-5.3-Codex as the First LTS Model

GPT-5.3-Codex is GitHub's first LTS model, developed in partnership with OpenAI. Launched on February 5, 2026, it will remain available through February 4, 2027 for Copilot Business and Enterprise users. The model has demonstrated strong performance among enterprise customers, with a "significantly high code survival rate" based on GitHub Copilot telemetry data.

Model Transition and Rollout Timeline

GPT-5.3-Codex will become the newest base model for Copilot, replacing GPT-4.1. This transition will happen automatically across all Copilot Business and Enterprise organizations within 60 days of the announcement (by May 17, 2026). Key changes include:

  • Pricing: GPT-5.3-Codex carries a 1x premium request unit multiplier
  • Backward compatibility: GPT-4.1 will remain force-enabled at a 0x multiplier during the transition period
  • Flexibility: Organizations needing more time can contact their account team

Scope and Impact

These LTS changes apply exclusively to Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise plans. Individual plans (Copilot Pro, Copilot Pro+, and Copilot Free) will continue to follow standard model deprecation timelines. Enterprises should review the supported models documentation and model management policies for detailed guidance.
