GitHub Copilot gains native web search on github.com for faster current events responses

Native Web Search Now Available

GitHub has enabled model-native web search in GitHub Copilot Chat on github.com for select models. This improvement leverages the built-in web search capabilities of certain language models to provide more current and accurate responses to time-sensitive questions about recent events and current information.

Supported Models

The following models now support native web search:

  • GPT-5.1
  • GPT-5.1-Codex
  • GPT-5.1-Codex-Mini (public preview)
  • GPT-5.1-Codex-Max
  • GPT-5.2-Codex

Other models will continue to use Bing search as before, ensuring consistent functionality across all available options.

Getting Started

This capability is available to all paid Copilot subscribers who have opted into public preview features. Organizations and enterprises can enable preview features by selecting Opt in to preview features in the Copilot on github.com settings.

Users can begin using native web search immediately by asking about current events in Copilot Chat. The feature can be toggled on or off via the Copilot can search the web using model native search setting in Copilot settings.

What's Next

GitHub plans to expand this functionality across additional models and contexts throughout the Copilot platform in the coming months.
