GA Launch of Copilot Usage Metrics
GitHub Copilot usage metrics has exited public preview and is now generally available for all eligible users. The feature provides a centralized platform for teams to monitor Copilot adoption, track usage trends, and make data-driven decisions about rollouts and enablement strategies.
Available Dashboards and Reporting
The GA release includes two primary dashboards:
- Copilot usage dashboard: Provides insights into code completion activity, IDE usage, model and language breakdowns, and team adoption metrics
- Code generation dashboard: Quantifies Copilot output by measuring lines suggested, added, or deleted across completions, chat, and agent features
Both dashboards offer enterprise-level and organization-level granularity, allowing leaders to understand adoption without relying solely on enterprise-wide aggregates.
Multi-Tier API Access
Organizations now have programmatic access to usage data through REST APIs at three levels:
- Enterprise-level: Bird's-eye view of all Copilot usage across an entire enterprise for aggregate analysis
- Organization-level: Organizations can access their own metrics programmatically to track team engagement and spot trends
- User-level: Analyze individual usage data for specific days to support enablement and identify training needs
Access Controls and Data Residency
The release introduces fine-grained access controls that let enterprises assign custom roles (such as View enterprise Copilot metrics) without requiring full admin access. GitHub Enterprise Cloud now supports data residency requirements, allowing organizations with compliance constraints to access metrics dashboards and API reporting.
