Overview

GitHub Copilot usage metrics has moved from public preview to general availability, giving teams a comprehensive platform for understanding how their organization adopts and uses GitHub Copilot. This release delivers dashboards and APIs that help leaders make informed decisions about rollout, track adoption trends, and build custom reports tailored to organizational needs.

What's Included

Dashboards and Visibility

The release includes three new dashboards:

  • Copilot usage dashboard: Provides visibility into code completion activity, IDE usage, model and language breakdown, and adoption trends
  • Code generation dashboard: Quantifies lines of code suggested, added, or deleted across completions, chat, and agent features
  • Granular access: Enterprise and organization owners can track adoption by team without relying on enterprise-wide aggregates

API Access at Multiple Levels

  • Enterprise-level API: Get comprehensive visibility across entire enterprise deployments for aggregate analysis on user engagement and pull request throughput
  • Organization-level API: Programmatic access to organization-specific Copilot usage for trend analysis and enablement assessment
  • User-level API: Analyze individual usage patterns by specific day to support targeted training and documentation efforts

Key Features and Access

New Capabilities

Since the public preview announcement at GitHub Universe 2025, the feature has expanded with:

  • Organization-level visibility for granular team tracking
  • Fine-grained access controls using custom enterprise roles (e.g., View enterprise Copilot metrics) without requiring full admin access
  • Data residency support for GitHub Enterprise Cloud deployments with regulatory requirements

Access the feature via your enterprise account → AI ControlsCopilotMetricsCopilot usage metrics. Requires Enterprise Administrator, Billing Manager, or appropriate fine-grained permissions.

Future Roadmap

GitHub is building toward outcome measurement, planning to connect usage patterns to engineering outcomes so organizations can move beyond adoption tracking to measuring actual impact on development velocity and quality.
