Official Copilot Integration Arrives in Zed

GitHub has announced general availability of GitHub Copilot support in Zed, a high-performance, multiplayer code editor built in Rust by the creators of Atom and Tree-sitter. This marks a formal partnership between GitHub and Zed, expanding Copilot's reach beyond VS Code and JetBrains IDEs.

Getting Started

Using Copilot in Zed is straightforward:

  • Open Settings in Zed and navigate to the "GitHub Copilot Chat" section
  • Click Sign in to use GitHub Copilot and follow the authentication modal
  • Start coding with Copilot assistance immediately

Subscription Requirements

All developers with paid GitHub Copilot subscriptions can use this feature:

  • Copilot Pro (individual)
  • Copilot Pro+ (individual with additional features)
  • Copilot Business (team/organization)
  • Copilot Enterprise (large-scale deployments)

No additional AI licenses or subscriptions are required—your existing Copilot subscription works seamlessly in Zed.

Why This Matters

This integration extends Copilot's availability to developers who prefer Zed's lightweight, multiplayer-friendly architecture. By supporting a third-party editor through official authentication, GitHub broadens Copilot's ecosystem and demonstrates commitment to IDE diversity.
