GitHub Copilot now uses native model web search for faster, more accurate answers on github.com

Model Native Web Search Now Available

GitHub Copilot Chat on github.com now leverages built-in web search capabilities from select AI models, replacing the previous reliance on Bing search for certain scenarios. This enhancement improves both speed and accuracy when asking Copilot about current events and other time-sensitive information.

Supported Models and Availability

The feature is available on the following models:

  • GPT-5.1 and GPT-5.1-Codex
  • GPT-5.1-Codex-Mini (in public preview)
  • GPT-5.1-Codex-Max
  • GPT-5.2-Codex

Other models will continue using Bing search. The capability is available to all paid Copilot subscribers who have enabled preview features.

How to Enable and Configure

Organizations and enterprises can enable this feature by selecting Opt in to preview features in the Copilot in github.com settings. Users can also disable the functionality at any time by toggling off Copilot can search the web using model native search in Copilot settings.

What Developers Should Know

This is a transparent improvement to the search experience within Copilot Chat—no code changes or new APIs are required. Users can ask questions about current events and recent developments, and Copilot will automatically use the model's native web search when appropriate. GitHub plans to expand this functionality across more models and contexts in the future.
