GitHub Copilot usage metrics now tracks user-level CLI activity
User-Level CLI Telemetry Now Available
GitHub is expanding its Copilot usage metrics to include user-level GitHub Copilot CLI activity, building on the enterprise-level CLI telemetry released last week. This enhancement provides teams with granular visibility into how individual developers are using Copilot through the command line.
What You Can Now Track
The new user-level metrics enable teams to:
- Identify active CLI users to determine where enablement or support is needed within your organization
- Measure usage patterns by viewing CLI request counts and session totals to understand daily developer workflows
- Monitor consumption trends through token usage visibility to plan for expanded rollouts and better forecast costs
Getting Started
Access the new user-level metrics through the GitHub REST API documentation. The endpoint allows queries for specific dates and provides comprehensive CLI activity data alongside existing Copilot usage metrics.
This update complements existing enterprise-level CLI telemetry while giving individual teams finer-grained control over understanding their Copilot adoption and usage patterns.
