Model Selection Now Available for All Copilot Tiers

GitHub's Copilot coding agent—an asynchronous, autonomous background agent that handles development tasks and opens pull requests for review—now supports model selection across Business and Enterprise plans. Previously limited to Pro and Pro+ subscribers, this feature expansion gives larger teams greater control over AI model selection for their workflow.

Available Models and Selection Methods

Users can now choose from eight model options when assigning tasks to Copilot:

  • Claude models: Opus 4.5, Opus 4.6, Sonnet 4.5, Sonnet 4.6
  • GPT-5 variants: GPT-5.1-Codex-Max, GPT-5.2-Codex, GPT-5.3-Codex
  • Auto mode: Default option that automatically selects the best model based on availability and performance

Model selection is available across multiple interfaces: github.com issue assignments, the agents tab, agents panel, GitHub Mobile, and the Raycast launcher.

Configuration and Fallback Behavior

If your organization's administrator has not enabled specific models, the model picker will not appear in the UI, and Claude Sonnet 4.6 will be used as the automatic fallback. For detailed configuration instructions, refer to GitHub's documentation on model selection in Copilot coding agent.
