Notion adds granular "can create pages" database permission for restricted contributors
New Database Permission for Granular Access Control
Notion has introduced a new "can create pages" database permission that provides more granular control over who can contribute to databases without exposing sensitive information.
What Changed
Previously, database permissions were limited to viewing, editing, and creating content broadly. The new permission allows you to:
- Grant users the ability to create new pages in a database
- Restrict their visibility to only the content they should access
- Prevent them from viewing or editing other team members' work
Use Cases
This feature is particularly valuable for:
- External contributors: Freelancers or contractors who need to submit work without accessing other sensitive data
- Meetings databases: Team members can view and edit their own meeting notes while creating new meetings, but cannot see colleagues' notes
- Sensitive information management: Teams handling confidential data can now invite contributors with precise, limited access levels
How to Use
The permission is now available in database sharing settings. Simply select the "can create pages" option when configuring access for team members or external users. This provides a middle ground between full access and read-only permissions.
