ChatGPT Arrives on DoD's GenAI.mil Platform

OpenAI announced today that ChatGPT is now available on GenAI.mil, the Department of Defense's secure enterprise AI platform serving 3 million military and civilian personnel. This deployment builds on OpenAI's existing government work, including past collaboration with DARPA on cybersecurity and a pilot program with the Department's Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO).

Custom Deployment with Enhanced Security

The ChatGPT instance deployed on GenAI.mil is a custom version specifically configured for unclassified DoD work. Key features include:

  • Isolation and data protection: Data processed on the platform remains isolated within government cloud infrastructure and is not used to train or improve OpenAI's commercial models
  • Built-in safeguards: Safety controls are embedded at both the model and platform levels to ensure reliability and robustness
  • Authorized infrastructure: The system runs on authorized government cloud infrastructure with security protections for sensitive department data

Supported Use Cases

ChatGPT on GenAI.mil is designed to support mission-critical workflows, including:

  • Summarizing and analyzing policy and guidance documents
  • Drafting and reviewing procurement and contracting materials
  • Generating internal reports and compliance checklists
  • Supporting research, planning, mission support, and administrative tasks

OpenAI emphasizes that this deployment reflects a "focused, practical, safety-forward" approach to government AI, with the goal of helping service members access reliable AI tools while maintaining the highest standards of data protection and system reliability.
