ChatGPT for Excel Beta Release

OpenAI is rolling out ChatGPT for Excel in beta, an Excel add-in that brings ChatGPT directly into workbooks. Powered by GPT-5.4, this tool enables users to build, update, and analyze spreadsheet models using plain language instead of manual formula writing. The add-in is available to ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, Teachers, Pro, and Plus users in the U.S., Canada, and Australia.

Key Capabilities

The Excel add-in offers three core features:

  • Spreadsheet Model Building: Users can describe what they need in plain language, and ChatGPT will create or update live Excel models directly in workbooks, handling data analysis, reporting, inventory management, and budgeting while preserving structure and formulas.
  • Cross-Workbook Analysis: ChatGPT can reason across multiple sheets, explain formula connections, trace errors, and show how assumptions flow through models—useful when inheriting templates or needing to audit existing work.
  • Transparent Reasoning: ChatGPT explains its actions, links answers to specific cells it references, and requests permission before making changes, allowing users to review each step and undo edits if needed.

Known Limitations

Some responses may require longer processing times as performance is optimized. Generated outputs may occasionally need cleanup to match formatting preferences, and complex formulas may still require manual refinement. ChatGPT for Google Sheets is coming soon.

GPT-5.4: A Finance-Optimized Model

The new GPT-5.4 model is designed specifically for financial reasoning and Excel-based modeling. On OpenAI's internal investment banking benchmark—which evaluates real-world workflows like building three-statement models with proper formatting and citations—GPT-5.4 Thinking achieved 87.3% accuracy, up from 43.7% with GPT-5. The model excels at financial modeling, scenario analysis, data extraction, and long-form research tasks.

GPT-5.4 is available across ChatGPT, Codex, and the OpenAI API.

Financial Data Integrations

OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT's capabilities with integrations from leading financial data providers:

  • Announced integrations: Moody's, Dow Jones Factiva, MSCI, Third Bridge, MT Newswire
  • Coming soon: FactSet, LSEG, S&P Global, Daloopa
  • Custom integrations: Users can build proprietary data apps using OpenAI's Model Context Protocol (MCP)

These integrations allow teams to conduct research, pull from filings, transcripts, and decks, and produce structured, cited outputs that can be exported to PDF or Microsoft Word. The research interface now offers more control, including the ability to focus on specific sources and review citations in a redesigned workspace.

Enterprise Adoption and Next Steps

For Enterprise, Edu, and Teacher workspaces, ChatGPT for Excel access is off by default. Admins can enable it for specific users with custom roles and group permissions. Organizations adopting these tools should start with the beta rollout and provide feedback to shape continued development.
