ChatGPT for Excel: AI-Powered Spreadsheet Modeling

OpenAI announced ChatGPT for Excel in beta, an Excel add-in that embeds ChatGPT directly into spreadsheets to help users build, update, and analyze financial models in plain language. The add-in works natively within Excel, preserving formulas, structures, and formatting while allowing teams to describe complex modeling tasks and have ChatGPT execute them automatically.

Key Capabilities

  • Build and update models faster: Users can describe spreadsheet tasks (financial modeling, scenario analysis, budgeting, inventory management) in plain language, and ChatGPT creates or updates live Excel models directly in the workbook.
  • Trace and understand complex models: ChatGPT can reason across multiple workbooks, explain formula connections, identify errors, and show how assumptions flow through calculations—critical for users inheriting templates or verifying existing work.
  • Auditable outputs with permission gates: All calculations run directly in Excel with cell-level traceability. ChatGPT explains its reasoning, links answers to specific cells, and asks for permission before making changes, allowing users to review and undo edits.

Availability

ChatGPT for Excel rolls out today in beta for Business, Enterprise, Edu, Teachers, Pro, and Plus users in the U.S., Canada, and Australia. Enterprise, Edu, and Teacher workspace admins can enable it selectively via custom roles. ChatGPT for Google Sheets is coming soon. Known limitations include occasional performance delays and potential formatting adjustments needed for complex formulas.

GPT-5.4: Finance-Optimized Model

The new GPT-5.4 model (available as GPT-5.4 Thinking in ChatGPT, Codex, and the API) achieves 87.3% accuracy on OpenAI's internal investment banking benchmark—up from 43.7% with GPT-5. The model was trained specifically for real-world finance workflows including three-statement modeling, scenario analysis, data extraction, and long-form research.

Financial Data Integrations

OpenAI added integrations with major financial data providers: Moody's, Dow Jones Factiva, MSCI, Third Bridge, MT Newswires, LSEG, S&P Global, and Daloopa, with FactSet coming soon. These integrations allow finance professionals to access market and company data directly within ChatGPT for faster research, earnings summaries, valuation snapshots, and credit memos.

Teams can also use the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to build custom apps connecting proprietary internal data sources to ChatGPT, enabling cited, structured outputs that export to PDF or Microsoft Word with full source tracking.
