ChatGPT for Excel Now Available in Beta

OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Excel in beta, bringing conversational AI capabilities directly into spreadsheets. The add-in enables users to build, update, and analyze financial models using plain language instructions rather than manual formula writing. Users can describe requirements, and ChatGPT will create or modify live Excel models while preserving structure, formulas, and assumptions in a native Excel workbook.

Key Capabilities

  • Model creation and updates: Build financial models, run scenario analysis, and perform data analysis, reporting, and budgeting through conversational prompts
  • Cross-workbook reasoning: ChatGPT can trace connections across sheets, explain formula logic, identify errors, and show how assumptions propagate through models
  • Auditability and transparency: All calculations run directly in Excel, allowing users to verify formulas, trace assumptions, and review changes before applying them

The feature is rolling out to ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, Teachers, Pro, and Plus users in the U.S., Canada, and Australia. Enterprise, Edu, and Teacher workspace admins can enable access for specific users via custom roles.

GPT-5.4: Financial Workflows Optimized

OpenAI released GPT-5.4 (including GPT-5.4 Thinking), its most advanced model to date, optimized specifically for financial reasoning and Excel-based modeling. According to OpenAI's internal investment banking benchmark, GPT-5.4 Thinking achieved 87.3% accuracy on real-world workflows like building three-statement models with proper formatting and citations—up from 43.7% with GPT-5. The model excels at financial modeling, scenario analysis, data extraction, and long-form research tasks that typically consume hours or days of analyst time.

GPT-5.4 is available across ChatGPT, the API platform, and Codex.

Financial Data Integrations Expanding

ChatGPT now integrates with major financial data providers—including FactSet, Dow Jones Factiva, LSEG, Moody's, MSCI, Third Bridge, and MT Newswire—enabling teams to pull market, company, and internal data into a single workflow. Users can generate cited outputs such as earnings summaries, valuation snapshots, and credit memos with proper source attribution.

For proprietary or custom data, teams can build their own integrations using OpenAI's Model Context Protocol (MCP). The research tools also include new controls allowing users to focus on specific data sources, shape research plans, and review citations in a redesigned workspace. Outputs can be exported to PDF or Microsoft Word for sharing.
