ChatGPT for Excel Now Available in Beta
OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT for Excel, a native Excel add-in powered by GPT-5.4 that allows users to build, update, and analyze spreadsheet models directly within workbooks. The tool is available in beta for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, Teachers, Pro, and Plus subscribers in the U.S., Canada, and Australia. A Google Sheets version is coming soon.
Key Capabilities
The Excel add-in enables three core workflows:
- Build and update models faster: Teams can describe financial models, scenario analyses, reporting, budgeting, and other analyses in plain language. ChatGPT generates or updates live Excel models while preserving existing structure, formulas, and assumptions.
- Analyze large spreadsheets without manual work: ChatGPT can trace connections across sheets, explain formula logic, identify errors, and show how assumptions propagate through models—useful for inheriting complex templates or auditing unfamiliar workbooks.
- Transparent, auditable outputs: All calculations run directly in Excel with explicit references to modified cells. ChatGPT requests permission before making changes and explains its reasoning, allowing teams to audit formulas and verify results before committing edits.
GPT-5.4: Optimized for Finance
GPT-5.4 is now available in ChatGPT, the OpenAI API, and Codex. On OpenAI's internal investment banking benchmark—which evaluates real-world workflows like building three-statement financial models—the model achieved 87.3% accuracy, up from 43.7% with GPT-5. The model excels at financial modeling, scenario analysis, data extraction, and research tasks commonly performed by analysts and strategists.
Financial Data Integrations
ChatGPT now integrates with leading financial data providers including Moody's, Dow Jones Factiva, MSCI, FactSet, LSEG, Third Bridge, and MT Newswire. Users can also build custom apps using OpenAI's Model Context Protocol (MCP) to connect proprietary data sources. These integrations enable cited research outputs, earnings summaries, valuation snapshots, and due diligence reports that can be exported to PDF or Microsoft Word.
Enterprise Security and Governance
For organizations, ChatGPT Enterprise includes role-based access control (RBAC), SAML SSO, SCIM, audit logs, DLP/SIEM integration, TLS 1.2+ encryption in transit, and AES-256 encryption at rest. Admins can enable ChatGPT for Excel on a per-user basis with granular group permissions. Data shared with ChatGPT Enterprise is not used for model training by default.
