ChatGPT for Excel Beta Launch

OpenAI announced ChatGPT for Excel, a new add-in that embeds ChatGPT directly into spreadsheets. Powered by GPT-5.4, this tool enables analysts, strategists, and financial professionals to build and update models in plain language rather than manually writing formulas. The feature is now rolling out in beta to ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, Teachers, Pro, and Plus users in the U.S., Canada, and Australia.

Key Capabilities

The Excel add-in includes three main capabilities:

  • Build and update models faster: Describe what you need in plain language, and ChatGPT creates or modifies live Excel models while preserving structure, formulas, and assumptions.
  • Analyze complex spreadsheets: ChatGPT can reason across multiple sheets, explain formula relationships, trace errors, and show how assumptions impact outputs—useful when inheriting templates or understanding inherited models.
  • Transparent reasoning: All calculations run natively in Excel with explanations linked to specific cells, enabling users to audit formulas, verify results, and review each change before it's applied.

GPT-5.4 for Finance Workflows

GPT-5.4 (available today in ChatGPT, Codex, and the API) is optimized for financial reasoning tasks. On OpenAI's internal investment banking benchmark—evaluating real-world workflows like building three-statement models—performance improved from 43.7% (GPT-5) to 87.3% (GPT-5.4 Thinking). The model handles longer context and more complex financial analysis compared to previous versions.

Financial Data Integrations

OpenAI expanded ChatGPT's data connectivity for finance teams, integrating with major providers including FactSet, Moody's, Dow Jones Factiva, LSEG, MSCI, S&P Global, Third Bridge, and MT Newswire. Users can also build proprietary data apps using the Model Context Protocol (MCP). These integrations enable teams to:

  • Conduct research and analysis with cited sources
  • Generate earnings summaries and valuation snapshots directly in ChatGPT
  • Pull data from filings, transcripts, and decks for structured due diligence reports
  • Export results to PDF or Microsoft Word with full citation tracking

Known Limitations and Availability

The Excel add-in is currently in beta with some known limitations: response times may be slower as performance is optimized, generated outputs may require formatting adjustments, and complex formulas may still need manual refinement. For Enterprise, Edu, and Teacher workspaces, access is disabled by default; admins can enable it with custom role-based permissions. ChatGPT for Google Sheets is coming soon.
