ChatGPT for Excel Now in Beta

OpenAI is rolling out ChatGPT for Excel in beta, an Excel add-in that embeds ChatGPT directly into spreadsheets to help analysts, strategists, and finance professionals build and update models faster. The tool can create or update live Excel models from natural language descriptions, run data analysis and scenario testing, and reason across multiple sheets to trace errors and understand formula dependencies.

Key capabilities include:

  • Spreadsheet model generation: Describe modeling needs in plain language and ChatGPT builds or updates Excel models while preserving structure and formulas
  • Cross-sheet analysis: Understand connections between sheets, identify formula dependencies, and trace how assumptions flow through models
  • Explainable outputs: ChatGPT links answers to specific cell references and requests permission before making changes, enabling full auditability
  • Multi-document reasoning: Analyze large spreadsheets without manual reconciliation and quickly onboard to inherited templates

GPT-5.4 Optimized for Finance Workflows

The release is powered by GPT-5.4 Thinking, OpenAI's most advanced model, which achieved 87.3% performance on OpenAI's internal investment banking benchmark—a significant jump from 43.7% with GPT-5. The benchmark evaluates real-world workflows including three-statement financial modeling, scenario analysis, data extraction, and research synthesis.

GPT-5.4 is available across ChatGPT, the API, and Codex and has been optimized for the complex reasoning tasks finance professionals perform daily.

Financial Data Integrations

Beyond Excel, OpenAI is releasing integrations with major financial data providers directly in ChatGPT, including:

  • Moody's, Dow Jones Factiva, MSCI, Third Bridge, MT Newswires
  • FactSet (coming soon)
  • Support for proprietary data through the Model Context Protocol (MCP) for custom integrations

These integrations allow teams to conduct research and due diligence within ChatGPT, pull from filings and transcripts, and generate cited outputs exportable to PDF or Word.

Availability and Limitations

ChatGPT for Excel is rolling out in beta to ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, Teachers, Pro, and Plus users in the U.S., Canada, and Australia. In Enterprise workspaces, access is off by default and can be enabled by admins. ChatGPT for Google Sheets is coming soon.

Note: Beta limitations include occasional performance delays and formatting adjustments needed on generated outputs. Complex formulas may require manual refinement.
