ChatGPT for Excel in Beta

OpenAI is introducing ChatGPT for Excel in beta, an Excel add-in powered by GPT-5.4 that brings AI capabilities directly into spreadsheets. Users can now describe modeling tasks in plain language and have ChatGPT build or update live Excel models, run scenario analyses, and generate insights without manually writing formulas. The tool is designed for analysts, strategists, accountants, and researchers who spend significant time on spreadsheet-based workflows.

Key Capabilities

The Excel add-in enables three primary workflows:

  • Faster model building: Teams can describe complex models in plain language and ChatGPT creates or updates them while preserving Excel-native structure and formulas
  • Cross-workbook reasoning: ChatGPT can understand connections between sheets, trace how assumptions flow through models, identify errors, and explain why outputs changed
  • Auditable results: All calculations run directly in Excel, allowing users to trace assumptions, verify formulas, and review each step before ChatGPT makes changes to a workbook

Financial Data Integrations

Beyond the Excel tool, OpenAI is launching integrations with major financial data providers directly in ChatGPT, including Moody's, Dow Jones Factiva, MSCI, Third Bridge, MT Newswire, and FactSet (coming soon). These integrations enable teams to conduct research, pull from SEC filings and earnings transcripts, and produce cited, structured outputs that export to PDF or Word—all within a single ChatGPT workflow.

GPT-5.4 Performance

The new model, GPT-5.4 (available as GPT-5.4 Thinking), shows significant improvements on financial tasks. On OpenAI's internal investment banking benchmark, GPT-5.4 Thinking achieved 87.3% accuracy on real-world workflows including three-statement models, data extraction, and scenario analysis—up from 43.7% with GPT-5.

Availability and Rollout

ChatGPT for Excel beta is rolling out starting today for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, Teachers, Pro, and Plus users in the U.S., Canada, and Australia. In Enterprise workspaces, access is off by default and requires admin enablement. ChatGPT for Google Sheets is coming soon. The OpenAI API also now supports GPT-5.4 and GPT-5.4 Thinking.
