Model Retirement Timeline

OpenAI will retire four models from ChatGPT effective February 13, 2026:

  • GPT-4o
  • GPT-4.1
  • GPT-4.1 mini
  • o4-mini

Note that these changes apply to ChatGPT only; the OpenAI API has no changes at this time.

Why GPT-4o Is Being Retired

While multiple older models are being deprecated, GPT-4o deserves special context. OpenAI initially deprecated the model but restored it after hearing feedback from Plus and Pro users who needed more time to transition key workflows—particularly creative ideation—and preferred its conversational style and warmth.

That user feedback directly informed the development of GPT-5.1 and GPT-5.2, which now include:

  • Enhanced personality and creativity improvements
  • Customizable response styles including base personalities (e.g., "Friendly") and granular controls for warmth and enthusiasm
  • Better support for the creative use cases GPT-4o users valued

User Adoption Has Shifted

OpenAI is announcing the retirement today because the company's goals have been met: vast majority usage has migrated to newer models, with only 0.1% of daily active ChatGPT users still selecting GPT-4o. This makes the retirement decision more defensible and allows the team to focus development efforts on widely-used models.

Broader Product Direction

Beyond model retirement, OpenAI is advancing ChatGPT in several areas users requested:

  • Further personality and creativity improvements
  • Reducing unnecessary refusals and overly cautious responses
  • Developing an 18+ version grounded in treating adults like adults
  • Rolling out age prediction for users under 18 in most markets

The company acknowledges this change will frustrate some users and commits to clear communication about model retirements and timelines.
