SCIP transitions to independent open governance with steering committee from Meta, Uber
Open Governance Model for SCIP
Sourcegraph has announced a major governance transition for SCIP (Source Code Information Protocol), its language-agnostic protocol for indexing source code that powers code navigation features like Go to definition and Find references. After four years of development, SCIP is moving from Sourcegraph's direct ownership to an independent project with open community governance.
Core Steering Committee Structure
The initiative establishes three governance tiers to balance innovation with stability:
- SCIP Enhancement Proposals (SEP) Process: A public RFC mechanism for all significant protocol changes, ensuring transparent debate and resolution of architectural and schema updates
- Core Steering Committee (CSC): Decision-making authority on strategic direction and protocol definitions, led by inaugural members Catherine Gasnier (Meta), Jamy Timmermans (Uber), and Michal Kielbowicz (Sourcegraph)
- Community Participation: Open contribution and discussion channels via GitHub issues, Discord, and the updated governance documentation
Next Steps for Contributors
Developers and organizations interested in shaping SCIP's future can:
- Review the complete governance structure and SEP process
- Submit architectural or schema proposals using the new SEP template
- Join discussions on the official Discord community
Sourcegraph remains actively committed to SCIP and will continue investing in its development as a core community member.
