Windsurf replaces credits with usage quotas; introduces $200/month Max plan

New Pricing Structure

Windsurf is overhauling its billing model to replace credits with usage allowances. The four-tier pricing includes:

  • Free: Light daily quota with limited model availability
  • Pro: $20/month with increased quotas and access to frontier models (Opus 4.6, GPT-5.4, Gemini Pro)
  • Teams: $40/seat/month with centralized billing and admin analytics
  • Max: $200/month with significantly higher quotas and priority support

Why the Change

The credit-based system charged equally for simple and complex requests, creating perverse incentives. Users avoided asking quick questions and crammed multiple requests into single prompts, degrading the interactive experience. As models have improved, task complexity has grown—with some sessions now involving dozens of model calls—making the old system increasingly misaligned with actual usage patterns.

Usage Allowances and Pricing Details

Usage consumption varies by model tier and task complexity. Pro and Teams users can expect:

  • Premium Plus models (Opus 4.6, GPT-5.4): 7-27 messages/day
  • Premium models (Sonnet 4.6, GPT-5.2): 8-101 messages/day
  • Lightweight models (Haiku, Flash): 47-190 messages/day

Max plan users receive roughly 5-6x higher allowances. Beyond included quotas, users can purchase additional usage at API pricing. Free models like SWE-1.5 remain available without additional charges.

Transition and Guarantees

Existing paid subscribers receive one free week on the new system starting March 19 to evaluate the change. Pro and Teams customers get indefinite grandfathered pricing at their current rate. Free users migrate automatically. Flex credits convert to dollar amounts for extra usage at equivalent value. Enterprise customers remain on existing agreements.
