Profile Name Visibility Control Now Available
GitHub has released a new configuration option that allows enterprise and organization administrators to control the visibility of profile names (first and last names) alongside user handles across the platform.
Where This Applies
The setting applies across all GitHub spaces, including:
- Repositories
- Issues
- Pull requests
- Discussions
- Public, private, and internal repositories within your enterprise organizations
Configuration Options
Enterprise-level settings provide three choices:
- Enable everywhere: Profile names appear across all organizations
- Disable everywhere: Profile names are hidden across all organizations
- Let organizations decide: Individual organizations can configure their own preference
Organization-level settings can only be configured if the enterprise policy is set to "Let organizations decide". Organizations can then toggle the feature on or off independently.
How to Configure
Admins can access these settings by navigating to their enterprise or organization Settings, then finding the "Member appearance" section under "Profile name visibility." GitHub has also published detailed documentation in their enterprise account guide for additional guidance.
This feature gives enterprises more granular control over how user identities are displayed, balancing transparency with privacy and accessibility preferences across different organizational contexts.
