Model Deprecation Timeline

GitHub Copilot is deprecating five AI models across all experiences, including Copilot Chat, inline edits, ask and agent modes, and code completions:

• Gemini 3 Pro — Deprecated March 26, 2026 (accelerated due to Google Cloud provider deprecation)
• GPT-5.1 — Deprecated April 1, 2026
• GPT-5.1-Codex — Deprecated April 1, 2026
• GPT-5.1-Codex-Mini — Deprecated April 1, 2026
• GPT-5.1-Codex-Max — Deprecated April 1, 2026

Recommended Alternatives

Users should migrate to the following supported models before deprecation dates:

• Replace Gemini 3 Pro with Gemini 3.1 Pro
• Replace all GPT-5.1 variants with GPT-5.3-Codex

Action Items for Users and Administrators

For all users: Update your Copilot workflows and integrations to use supported models before the specified dates.

For Copilot Enterprise administrators: Enable access to alternative models through model policies in Copilot settings. Verify availability by checking individual Copilot settings and confirming policy enablement for the specific model. Once enabled, the model will appear in the Copilot Chat model selector in VS Code and on github.com.

No action is required to remove deprecated models after the cutoff dates—they will be automatically disabled. Enterprise customers with questions should contact their account manager for assistance.
