Plan Mode Telemetry Now Available

GitHub has extended its Copilot metrics platform to include comprehensive telemetry for plan mode, giving enterprises better visibility into how their teams are using this feature directly within their IDEs. This addition enables organizations to track adoption and engagement trends for plan mode alongside all other existing Copilot metrics.

Supported Platforms and Access

Plan mode telemetry is now available across multiple IDE environments:

  • JetBrains IDEs
  • Eclipse
  • Xcode
  • VS Code Insiders (with general VS Code release coming soon)

Metrics are available at the enterprise, organization, and user levels. To access this data, ensure that "Copilot usage metrics" is enabled for your enterprise or organization.

How to Access the Data

API Integration: The API response includes plan mode usage denoted by chat_panel_plan_mode under three keys:

  • totals_by_feature
  • totals_by_language_feature
  • totals_by_model_feature

Dashboard UI: Within the GitHub dashboard, navigate to Insights > Copilot usage to view plan mode breakdowns for request and model usage.

Important Change to Existing Metrics

Note that plan mode telemetry was previously mixed into the "Custom" category. Now that it's properly isolated, you may observe a dip in "Custom" usage reporting. This change may affect dashboard charts like "Requests per chat mode" and "Model usage per chat mode," but represents more accurate categorization of your usage data.
