Native Web Search Now Available

GitHub Copilot Chat on github.com now integrates model native web search capabilities, enabling faster and more accurate responses to current events and time-sensitive questions. This enhancement leverages the built-in web search functionality of select AI models rather than relying solely on traditional search indexing.

Supported Models

This feature is available on the following models:

  • GPT-5.1 and GPT-5.1-Codex
  • GPT-5.1-Codex-Mini (in public preview)
  • GPT-5.1-Codex-Max
  • GPT-5.2-Codex

Models without native web search support will continue using Bing search as the fallback mechanism, ensuring all users have web search capabilities regardless of their model selection.

Availability and Access

This capability is available to all public preview enabled paid Copilot subscribers. Organizations and enterprises can enable this feature by selecting Opt in to preview features in Copilot settings on github.com. Users can opt out of model native search at any time by toggling off the Copilot can search the web using model native search setting in Copilot preferences.

What's Next

GitHub plans to roll out this functionality across additional models and contexts within GitHub Copilot. Users are invited to join discussions in the GitHub community to share feedback and stay informed about future expansions.
