GitHub Copilot usage metrics expands to track CLI activity across enterprises

CLI Metrics Now Integrated Into Enterprise Dashboards

GitHub has extended its Copilot enterprise usage metrics API to include comprehensive telemetry from the Copilot CLI. This expansion allows organizations to view CLI activity alongside IDE usage, providing a complete picture of how developers interact with GitHub Copilot across different environments.

What's Now Trackable

The updated metrics endpoint now captures:

  • Daily active CLI users - See how many developers are actively using the CLI tool each day
  • CLI request and session counts - Monitor command frequency and session patterns
  • Token usage totals - Track aggregate token consumption with average tokens per request breakdown

Why This Matters for Enterprises

Organizations can now:

  • Measure adoption - Identify which teams and departments are leveraging Copilot CLI and where enablement or support may be needed
  • Compare usage patterns - Analyze how developers use Copilot across different tools (IDE extensions vs. CLI) to understand real-world usage trends
  • Plan consumption - Use token metrics to forecast usage patterns and guide phased rollout strategies across your organization

This update follows GitHub's recent launch of Copilot metrics as a generally available feature, and complements existing reporting tools for Enterprise Managed Users and plan mode tracking.
