OpenAI and Amazon Partner on Stateful Runtime for Bedrock

OpenAI and Amazon have announced a joint collaboration to deliver a Stateful Runtime Environment that runs natively within Amazon Bedrock. Powered by OpenAI models and optimized for AWS infrastructure, this runtime is designed specifically for production agentic workflows that require persistence, reliability, and governance.

The Problem It Solves

Traditional stateless APIs require teams to manually build orchestration layers to manage agent workflows. In production environments, this creates significant overhead: developers must handle state storage, tool invocation, error recovery, and context management across multiple steps. The new Stateful Runtime eliminates this burden by managing the operational complexity internally.

Key Capabilities

The runtime provides:

  • Persistent working context: Memory and history automatically carry forward across steps
  • Tool and workflow state management: Agents track tool outputs and maintain state without manual orchestration
  • Built-in reliability: Long-running tasks execute safely with proper error handling and resumption
  • AWS-native security: Operates within customers' AWS environments with integrated identity, permissions, and governance controls
  • Multi-step execution: Supports complex workflows including approvals, audits, and system integrations

Use Cases Enabled

This unlocks production solutions for:

  • Multi-system customer support
  • Sales operations workflows
  • Internal IT automation
  • Finance processes with approvals and audits

Availability and Next Steps

The Stateful Runtime in Amazon Bedrock will be available soon. Customers interested in exploring the platform should contact their OpenAI team or request to be contacted for early access.
