OpenAI launches Stateful Runtime Environment in Amazon Bedrock for production AI agents
Production-Ready Agent Orchestration
OpenAI and Amazon have partnered to deliver the Stateful Runtime Environment, a new system purpose-built for deploying AI agents in production. While stateless APIs work for simple single-prompt workflows, real-world agent applications require persistent orchestration across multiple steps, context preservation from previous actions, tool integration, and reliable error handling.
Key Capabilities
The Stateful Runtime Environment provides:
- Persistent state management – Maintains working context, memory/history, tool state, and workflow progress across multi-step executions
- Native AWS integration – Runs inside customer AWS environments, optimized for AWS service integration and compliance
- Built-in orchestration – Handles tool invocation, error recovery, and long-running task management automatically
- Governance and security – Includes identity/permission boundaries, audit trails, and approval workflows suitable for enterprise deployments
Practical Applications
Developers can now build complex agentic systems including:
- Multi-system customer support workflows
- Sales operations processes
- Internal IT automation
- Finance processes with built-in approvals and audits
Availability
The Stateful Runtime Environment will be available soon in Amazon Bedrock, powered by OpenAI models. Interested customers should contact their OpenAI team or register their interest for early access.
