Linear MCP Expansion for Product Management
Linear's MCP server now includes comprehensive support for product management workflows. Product managers can now create and edit initiatives, manage initiative updates, create and edit project milestones, and update project status directly from AI tools like Claude and Cursor. This allows teams to keep Linear synchronized with external workflows without switching contexts.
New MCP capabilities:
- Create and edit initiatives and initiative updates
- Create and edit project milestones and project updates
- Manage project labels
- Load images within MCP interactions
- Support for loading Linear resources through URLs
The expansion includes performance improvements through better tool documentation and reduced token usage, making it more efficient for AI-powered interactions.
Platform Updates
In addition to MCP enhancements, Linear introduces nested sub-issues display, allowing teams to visualize issue hierarchies directly in issue lists for better context and progress tracking.
Team lifecycle management is now simplified with the ability to retire teams. When teams are no longer active, admins and workspace owners can retire them to reduce sidebar clutter while preserving all project and issue history as read-only archives. Retired teams can be restored at any time.
Breaking Changes
Linear is deprecating the /sse MCP endpoint in favor of HTTP streams. Clients using https://mcp.linear.app/sse should migrate to https://mcp.linear.app/mcp. Deprecation errors will be rolled out gradually over two months. All modern MCP clients already support HTTP streams as the more reliable transport.
Additional Improvements
The release includes numerous UX and integration improvements: Slack message forwarding now preserves file attachments when creating issues, email intake generates AI-powered titles for messages with missing subjects, iOS app now supports creating initiatives, and notifications alert assignees when issues are deleted. Security enhancements restrict login method bypass to workspace owners only in Enterprise workspaces. The update also fixes critical bugs in the action menu (CJK IME responsiveness), dashboards, editor functionality, and search behavior.
